Week 9 - Improving your listening

Easy listening:
Some students have asked me how to improve listening and note-taking, and how to remember new words. This listening website can help you do all of this.

Look at the  video stories and find a story that interests you.

Listen to the report 2 or 3 times and take notes as you listen. Don't look at the script yet - remember you are concentrating on your listening.

When you are happy with your notetaking, look at the script to check you haven't missed anything important.

Then do the vocabulary exercise at the bottom of the page. Add any new words to your vocabulary book.

Finally, use your notes to write a short summary of the news report. This will help you with your paraphrasing (writing in your own words).

If you find this exercise difficult, you need to do a lot more work on your listening. Choose another story and repeat the process above.

If you find the exercise easy try ......

A bigger challenge!!

Go to TED talks and listen to Jason Pontin talk about some of the challenges of using technology effectively to solve the world's big problems.

Consultation followup

After the consultations today, there are a number of areas some students asked me for more information:
  • Academic words - try the i-phone app 'vital english' academic words. If you find another app for academic word practise put it on the blog for other students.
  • Formality. Here is some useful information and some formality exercises you can practise

Ai WeiWei is a artist and a social activist as well.  He had been arrested and was been imprisoned by the police because he oppose the government. He opposes the government because of the corrupted politicians and was imprisoned, because he fight against the government. He also got the public support. As Ai weiwei  revels the truth, he should be given importance and one must think about the politics and the corruption, few changes must be done in order to get a corruption free country.

Katie The article of Ai weiwei

Ai Weiwei is a traditional Chinese artist. He has the high reputation in the world. He took part in design of Beijing 2008 Olympic game. He influences young People’s thinking and behaviour through the Internet and social Media. He always shows some real documentary on his blog. He says something what he wants to see and does something in his own way but sometimes is not very good. In my opinions, he had studied  in United States for many years. He does not know the Chinese history very clearness. He can’t see what happened in these years. His thinking influences some People. So our government have their own way to deal with them.

Ai Weiwei is an artist and a social activist. He disagrees with the government of China, and he work against the government. Because this, He has highly and openly critical of the Chinese Government`s stance on democracy and human rights. Hi has investigated government corruption, so he has suffered punishment from government. The result, a lot of peoples protested against the government to help him, and to try to implant on democracy either. China is a very old country, maybe sometimes, some changes can be necessaries. Because of the large number that live in China, democracy can be so hard to implant, but is the more just politic system.

Henry

Free great artist in china

Ai WeiWei is a famous artist in the world. He is a free people because he always says what he want to say and do the thing he what to do. Why is he so controversial in China?  One reason to explain it should be his works which often hard to stomach by Chinese government. One of governmental officer says that WeiWei touch the base line of Chinese law. WeiWei has been in to the jail because his words and deeds. Some of the foreign media attack Chinese government to do that thing and some people in china also think government do the wrong action. I am a Chinese, so I do not want to say something harmful to my country. The government has its own reason to do this but sometimes the government solve the problem too extremely to get effect on matter. WeiWei is want to talk something about the weak point in china, his works influence a lot of Chinese youth people even the world. So he is a good artist in the world, but maybe not good in China.

Specially in US 80% kids between 13 and 14 years old have problems with sleep deprivation.  Regarding to teacher from US, this is a big challenge for teachers, for they need to do an interesting and exiting classes every day, maybe to be better way to teach in this situation. On the other hand, if you sleep every well, you can learn more and  have a good results in exams, said the speaker. Sleep deprivation is considered a health problem by some scientists, but there are some solutions for this issue. Jonathas Christian - The beauty about Puerto Ricos`s beaches

The Puerto Rico is a small country, like many island together, in the Latina America (near the Caribbean Sea and North Atlantic Ocean), but it is a beautiful small country because has many spectacular places. Many people all over the world know Puerto Rico due to its wonderful beaches and nice people. There are many parties and celebration on beaches so that enjoy the people go to there. Therefore, if you want to know divine beaches, you should go to Puerto Rico, and you nerve forget this place.

Tharindu Ranwala :- Caribbean Island

Topic :- Caribbean Island

Caribbean island is a region that consists of the Caribbean Sea, its islands, and the surrounding coasts. The region is southeast of the Gulf of Mexico and the North American mainland, east of Central America, and north of South America. There are thousand islands that are part of the island countries. So many beautiful beach and nice scenery place located in the Caribbean island. So that’s why most foreign people like to go that island. And Caribbean island have a very old history in the world. HENRY TOPIC: In my opinion, television commercials for cosmetics lie to women

TV commercials now are gaudier and gaudier to people, many of these are not false. They just want to make money by themselves. They didn’t regard about the feeling of the customers. Like many  TV commercials which market cosmetics. These commercials are always untruthfulness. They want women to buy their products and they exaggerate their poor products. These things don’t has any function, but lot of women was attract by their commercials so lots of women  had been cheated by the company who make these commercials. The worst case was some of the company just want make money and they deceive your telephone rate.

Move away from home is always a dream from the most of the teenagers. But could it be not a good experience for some of them. When we are younger we have the ’ thirst’ of freedom and we just want to get away from our parents, but when we see the reality of the things and how we do to living alone, we can get frustrated, because you have to do the things by yourself, like cooking and clean your own clothes and you still have to find time to study and sleep well. So by the first time, if the young people don`t get prepared with a mature mentality, moving away from home could it be a stressful experience.
Eduardo A.Lima

Amanda Cavalcante

In my opinion, television commercials for cosmetics lie to women because there isn’t women perfect like in the commercials. Usually, we don’t see those clear and perfect skins in the streets. I think they use photoshop in these commercials to illusion women they will be beautiful using these products. Then, they buy more and it`s just benefice the cosmetics business. For this, the television is very important because many people watch television everyday and when the women watch these commercials, they want to be like a woman that appear in the commercial too.

Jonas Pereira de Souza Junior --> The Amazing Puerto Rico.
